Concept Document Assignment

So after a few weeks of workshops and lectures we move into a 5 week project. The goal of his project is to create a concept document for a 2D, no gravity, shooter (space shooter). We were put into groups of six with six different roles to represent a real design team. The roles are: Producer, Lead Designer, Lead Art, Lead Code, Lead Sound and QA (quality assurance). I got the part of Lead Art, which means I have to make sure the art style and graphics are connected to our aesthetic goals, and that the presentation we make has some form of concept art and moodboard in it.   We had our first meeting on Monday 13/10 where we assigned the roles and started to work out what we wanted our game concept to be. Each group was given two words that they had to incorporate into their game. Our team got the words ”Date” and ”Chandelier”. After a brainstorming session we decided the theme for our game. Then we started to work out the aesthetic goals and the mechanics we needed to make them happen. So after our first meeting we have got an outline for what kind of game we want to make, and what our individual tasks are. Next meeting we will start to work on the design document itself and also work on a way to make a paper prototype of the game.

Game Design and Graphics

This will be my work and studies blog for my three years here at Uppsala University Campus Gotland.

Immediately when the first course started I knew I’d found a really good programme. It was just design, design, design, from the get-go.

So now I’m two weeks in and the pace hasn’t dropped. It’s both challenging and a lot of fun. This week we are going over the last steps of the basics about the design process and then we’ll start making our own games, well not real games but very basic paper versions of games. I can’t wait.

So far our assignments have been:

  • An analysis of the classic game Space invaders.
  • A breakdown and redesign of the card-game SissyFight 3000.
  • Writing the concept for an ”impending doom” game, a game in which you cannot win but only die.

As I’m studying Graphics, I will also use this blog as a gallery for my Game Concept Art which I hope you will enjoy!
